The knee is a remarkably mobile joint, supported on all sides and internally by ligaments, cartilage and muscle. It's a work of art, and with all the load we put through it, things go wrong.
For many people knee pain eventually leads to a knee replacement. Before you get there, there are options worth exploring.
Why knees fail
Knee pain is usually a symptom of a problem somewhere else in the chain:
- Hip weakness lets the knee collapse inward under load, grinding the kneecap against the femur
- Ankle stiffness forces the knee to absorb force it wasn't designed to absorb
- Quadriceps and glute weakness removes the shock absorption the joint depends on
- Excess body weight multiplies force through the joint. Every pound of body weight is roughly four pounds of force through the knee when you walk
That last point is why our weight loss program and our knee program so often run together. Losing 20 lbs takes roughly 80 lbs of force per step off the joint.
Our approach
At Toledo Health and Wellness Institute we take an integrative approach to knee pain, bringing medical and alternative treatments together to help your body heal. The goal is to address the underlying cause rather than simply mask the symptoms.
Depending on your diagnosis, a plan might include targeted injections to break the inflammation cycle, physiotherapy to rebuild the muscle that supports the joint, manual therapy to restore mechanics, and weight management when load is the driving factor.
What patients report
- Reduced swelling
- Reduced inflammation
- Reduced pain with stairs and standing
- Increased range of motion
- Getting back to walking, working and training
Book a consultation and we'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and if surgery really is the right answer, we'll tell you that too.
